The recruitment process to replace Grant Llewellyn took more than a year and a half: after inviting three men and three women, selected from 129 applicants, to conduct two series of concerts, the Orchestre National de Bretagne has now made its decision. Impressed by his “sustainable and ambitious project,” the management has appointed Canadian Nicolas Ellis, who will remain at the helm of the ensemble for four years, starting next season.

A trained pianist, Nicolas Ellis is the artistic director and conductor of the Agora Orchestra in Montreal, an ensemble that uses music as a tool for sustainable social change and is committed to working with humanitarian and environmental organizations, incarcerated individuals, and disadvantaged children. The maestro also conducts the chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy and was artistic collaborator with the Orchestre métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin from 2018 to 2023. Invited by numerous Canadian orchestras and opera houses, he has also been seen in Europe in recent years, notably at the Graz Opera.

The French ministry of culture has promulgated the appointment of Nicolas Ellis as music director of the Orchestre National de Bretagne. He will start in 2024, succeeding the Welshman Grant Llewellyn, who has held the post for eight years.

Ellis, 32, is founder of Canada’s Orchestre de l’Agora and artistic partner to Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Orchestre Métropolitain.

Quebec City, November 21, 2022 – On the eve of the performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Jonathan Cohen, Music Director, and Laurent Patenaude and Patrice Savoie, Co-Executive Directors of Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec, are pleased to announce that Mr. Nicolas Ellis will be serving as Principal Guest Conductor of Les Violons du Roy as of the 2023–2024 season. Ellis is a remarkably talented musician with a versatility perfectly consistent with that of the orchestra.

Les Violons du Roy and Nicolas Ellis started working together in 2018 when he was invited as guest conductor of the orchestra to replace Bernard Labadie first, and then Jonathan Cohen on an American tour. This initial collaboration gave birth to a symbiotic musical and artistic relationship between the young conductor and the musicians of Les Violons du Roy. In addition to concerts in Quebec City and Montreal, Ellis has conducted the orchestra at Domaine Forget in Charlevoix and at the Festival de Lanaudière, working with soloists such as Karina Gauvin and Kerson Leong.

Ellis’s nomination comes as a result of Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec’s latest strategic plan, implemented in the fall of 2021. His role as Principal Guest Conductor will contribute to the stability and continuity of the orchestra’s artistic team. With the success of recent concerts conducted by Ellis in the summer and fall of 2021, there is no doubt that having him on Les Violons du Roy’s team will ensure varied and attractive programs that are in perfect harmony with the organization’s artistic philosophy.

A native of Saguenay, Nicolas Ellis studied the piano at the Conservatoire du Québec de Saguenay, the University of Montreal and McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, and has already gained a wealth of experience. The young artist is the founder and artistic director of the Orchestre de l’Agora—known in particular for its social commitment—and serves as Artistic Partner of the Orchestre Métropolitain, collaborating with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Among other distinctions, he received the Fernand Lindsay Career Award in 2017 and was named Radio-Canada’s Classical Revelation for 2018–2019. He also won the Mécénat Musica Prix Goyer in 2021.

As Principal Guest Conductor, Nicolas Ellis will be invited to conduct several programs as part of Les Violons du Roy’s regular seasons, as well as a variety of projects at festivals and on tour. The contract covers three seasons (2023 to 2026).

L’Orchestre de l’Agora présentera 11 concerts-ateliers au centre de détention de Montréal (prison de Bordeaux) lors de la saison 2021-2022. La prison de Bordeaux est la plus importante prison provinciale du Québec et accueille des prisonniers masculins condamnés à des peines de moins de deux ans d’emprisonnement et des prévenus en attente de procès. L’objectif des concerts-ateliers de l’OA (un par mois jusqu’en juillet 2022) est d’utiliser la musique comme outil de réhabilitation sociale. 

Des ensembles formés de deux à quatre musiciens de l’OA ont élaboré avec le chef et directeur artistique Nicolas Ellis des programmes d’une soixantaine de minutes qu’ils présenteront et expliqueront aux incarcérés. Ces concerts-ateliers, qui auront lieu à la chapelle de la prison, favoriseront la réflexion, les discussions et les échanges. Jusqu’ici, l’Orchestre a présenté deux concerts-ateliers à Bordeaux en juin et septembre 2021 : le résultat a été concluant et touchant.
